When the ignition is engaged, the starter motor receives electrical current from the battery, which activates the solenoid. The solenoid then pushes the starter's pinion gear into mesh with the engine's flywheel and simultaneously closes a high-current circuit to spin the motor, cranking the engine. Once the engine starts, the pinion gear disengages automatically.
